The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) is an English language test designed to assess the readiness of non-native English speakers to participate in a university-level English language instruction program. It is a computer-based exam which focuses on real-life English used in academic surroundings. This is to say that integrated language is used throughout the test and students will listen to a variety of accents and academic language which they will encounter at English-speaking higher education institutions.

The Reading section consists of questions on 4–6 passages, each approximately 700 words in length. The section is 60–100 minutes long. The section tests the test taker’s ability to interpret and analyze passages.
The listening section is to test the listening skills of a test taker. It involves two student conversations and 4 academic lectures. It is not to test the subject area being taught but rather to test the ability to extract ideas or main points from conversations. It consists of questions on six passages, each 3–5 minutes in length.
The speaking section tests the ability of the test taker to communicate in English coherently and convey their ideas with clarity. The section consists of 6 speaking tasks; 2 independent and 4 integrated tasks. The section is 20 minutes long.
This section tests the ability of the test taker to write in an academic setting. It consists of 2 tasks; 1 independent and 1 integrated task. It involves writing about your opinion on a particular topic and explaining it. While the integrated involves writing a summary to discuss the main points of a given passage and listening to a speaker discuss it. The section is 50 minutes long.
